Migraine headaches can be debilitating. Fortunately, Botox treatment for migraines can help manage migraine symptoms.

What are the symptoms of migraines?

Common migraine symptoms include:

  • Severe, unilateral headache
  • Nausea and loss of appetite
  • Vomiting or dizziness
  • Fatigue or blurred vision
  • Pale or creamy skin
  • Sensitivity to light, sound, touch or odours

Why use Botox to manage migraines?

Reducing migraines will improve your quality of life. Botox Therapeutic has been used in medicine for over 25 years to reduce spasticity and pain. Botox is FDA and Health Canada-approved to help prevent and reduce the frequency and severity of chronic migraine headaches. This is great news for you and your family if you suffer from frequent, debilitating headaches.

Who should consider Botox treatment for migraines?

Patients who have 15 or more headache days in a month, lasting for four or more hours, or patients whose chronic migraines are inadequately treated by medication are often candidates for Botox treatment for migraines.

What do I need to do before my first appointment?

You must obtain a diagnosis of chronic migraine from your family physician or a neurologist with written recommendation for treatment with Botox. Dr. Tkatch is a certified specialist with training in advanced Botox injection techniques, but is not qualified to diagnose your headache type or to recommend whether Botox is the best treatment choice for you.

What does it cost to get Botox treatment for migraines?

Medical Botox is usually covered under extended medical benefit programs. The Allergan Botox Access Program allows patients with third-party coverage to receive their first treatment on the day of consultation, with a one-time guarantee of drug coverage (even if the treatment is denied by your extended benefit plan) and assists patients with their insurance paperwork. While your extended health care plan may cover the prescription Botox, you are responsible for paying the physician injector fee of $379.

If you do not have an extended health plan, Dr. Tkatch will write you a prescription for medical Botox that you can fill at a pharmacy. The typical cost of filling the prescription is $900. You will also be responsible for paying the physician injector fee of $379. Please note that Dr. Tkatch will not administer the treatment unless you have already been diagnosed with chronic migraine and a recommendation for Botox treatment has been made by a neurologist or your family physician.

Botox treatment by a physician for migraines is a medical expense and can be claimed on your tax return.

What should I expect during treatment?

Migraine treatment sessions are comfortable and quick, usually only requiring 15 minutes to complete. The objective of the treatment program is to reduce the frequency and severity of migraine headaches. Most patients choose to retreat every 12 weeks.
