Botox and Fillers, What’s the Difference? Which One is Right for Me? December 16 2016

Botox is Allergan’s brand name for a purified protein that relaxes wrinkles in the forehead, frown and crows feet. Botox accomplishes this incredible feat by blocking the signal between nerve and muscle, diminishing repetitive muscle movements that cause the wrinkles to develop as we age. Other brand names available in Canada are Dysport and Xeomin, both excellent at relaxing troublesome expressions and also available at MD Wellness Solutions.

Often people looking to refresh their appearance will start with a little Botox in their frown or forehead and then when they see how natural they look they ask whether fillers could help their appearance. For most people the answer is absolutely!

Fillers are known by various brand names including Juvederm, Voluma, Restylane, Beletero, and Teosyal. All are made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring lubricating sugar found throughout the human body. Hyaluronic acid plumps out deep folds like the jowls and marionettes, defines cheek bones and enhances lips. A skilled injector will choose the right filler for your need and expertly administer it to achieve a natural, refreshed look.

So Botox or fillers, now that you know the difference, what’s right for you? Let our artist physicians Dr. Tkatch and Dr. Abrahams provide you an individualized recommendation for your treatment by booking a personal consult.

Turning 50 November 19 2016

I turned 50 this year and some of you in your 40s and younger may wonder: what does 50 feel like? 50 feels energizing!

I found 40 to be freeing. When I turned 40 I noticed that I ceased to care what other people thought of my decisions. Decisions on how to live, where to live, whom to love and how I spent my time. I finally felt comfortable in my skin.

When I turned 50 I found new energy. As I turned 50 I noticed a greater urgency to take steps to actively pursue and build the life I envisioned for myself and my loved ones.

Some of the changes with 50, however, are not so pleasant and a little surprising to me, even though they shouldn’t be.

My vision is no longer what it was, both for things near and far. My hearing makes conversation in loud restaurants impossible. My memory is no longer my greatest asset. Joints are feeling a little stiff in the mornings. My bladder leaks more easily and at inopportune times. Intimacy has become painful because my skin feels dry and tears easily.

I’m not ready to be less just yet, and hopefully never. My desire to live my best life into my 50s, 60s and beyond has caused me to become energized.

Energized to see and do the things that matter to me. Energized to stay as fit and active as possible so I can enjoy my body, even if it is a little stiff. Energized to find solutions for the internal changes that menopause has brought to my intimate life.

I am pleased to share that there are lots of solutions to assist all of us with these changes. For myself, I set the goal of running the half marathon to celebrate 50.

I enlisted the help of a personal trainer to get me to my goal without injuring myself. I embraced home skin care products and skin rejuvenation treatments to keep my skin texture and tone better then ever.

I researched and found solutions for my bladder symptoms and the pain with intimacy, and I am happy to share this solution with my patients, just ask!

I encourage each of you to find the solutions you need to be fit, active, healthy and happy into your 40s, 50s, 60s, and on.

Life Changes November 13 2016

Many of my clients first come to me when they are experiencing a life milestone. Some are happy milestones, like a son or daughter’s marriage, family reunion, the birth of a grandchild, or turning 40. Others are sad, like losing a spouse through death or divorce. Either way, people recognize that looking their best will help them feel their best as they move through these life changes.

My advice is to give yourself plenty of time to process the upcoming event and what it means to you. As we meet to plan your rejuvenation think about how you’ve always wanted to feel when you look your best. How about joyous, light hearted, and optimistic? These are the feelings people share with me when we complete their rejuvenation.

If your milestone is event based start at least a couple of months prior to allow us to layer your transformation. It may include botox, fillers, skin tightening, treatment of age spots and sun damage. We will start you on an excellent home skin care program to prepare you for and maintain your results.

Your appearance will be natural looking and people will wonder what your secret is. We’ll have you ready to look gorgeous at the precise time you need to and then work with you to keep you looking your best.

Just prior to your event, you’ll experience our signatory complementary HydraFacial MD to get you pampered and glowing for your big day. Come share your life change with me.

Teen Acne March 23 2016

Do you dread picture day?

Teen acne can sneak up on you or your teen suddenly. Among the myriad of changes puberty brings, from growing limbs to changing voices, the first signs of significant acne are easy to miss. Teens and their parents usually end up coming to see me when the problem has become serious and is really affecting self-confidence. Being a teen feels awkward enough without acne causing an even greater withdrawal from peers, sports and social activities.

There’s help! Acne can easily be treated with a proper at home skin care program, professional office treatments and prescription medications as necessary.

First, the skin care program. Teens are busy and they need a quick, easy routine they can accomplish on the go. I recommend a Clarisonic ultrasonic skin cleansing brush be used daily. A salisylic acid cleanser is a great choice for teens as is helps reduce the sebum or oil that causes acne. Good examples available in drugs stores are Cerave SA and Neutrogena. In our clinic, we love Simple Cleanser by SkinCeuticals and Oilacleanse by ZO Medical.

Follow this with a wipe with Cebatrol pads by ZO Medical to keep the skin oil free for hours. You’ll want to keep some Cebatrol pads in your gym bag to de-oil the skin after PE class.

In-office treatments include HydraFacial MD with Blue Light and chemical peels. These in-office treatments are an excellent opportunity for staff to review and reinforce home skin care habits and they really jump start a home skin care program, making quicker improvement possible.

Prescription medications are needed by some teens in order to obtain clear skin. The choices include topical preparations including retinols, and benzoyl peroxide. Sometimes oral antibiotics are necessary. And for the most serious cases, there is isotretinoin, also known as Accutane. If I prescribe this medication I will ask you to have regular lab tests and see you monthly to monitor for side effects and adjust your dose to ensure you your see skin clearing safely.

You don’t need to dread picture day! Contact us today at 604-385-3838 or info@mdwellness.ca to book your consultation with Dr. Tkatch.
